استقال اندرو كومو المرشح المُستقل السابق لعمدة نييورك الذي يُعتبر على نطاق واسع وسطيًا، من منصبه حاكمًا للمدينة عام ٢٠٢١ . وبعد هزيمة مفاجئة أمام ممداني في ترشيحات الحزب الديمقراطي في يونيو، قرر الترشح مستقلًا.

لممداني انتقاد لاذع لإسرائيل معظم المؤسسات الديمقراطية. فقد قدم عضو المجلس التشريعي مشروع قانون لإنهاء الإعفاء الضريبي للجمعيات الخيرية في نيويورك المرتبطة بالمستوطنات الإسرائيلية التي تنتهك القانون الدولي لحقوق الإنسان.كما قال إنه يعتقد أن إسرائيل ترتكب إبادة جماعية في غزة، وأنها دولة فصل عنصري، وأنه يجب اعتقال رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو.
تعرض ممداني لضغوطات صحفية عديدة في مقابلات صحفية ليُعلن دعمه لحق إسرائيل في الوجود كدولة يهودية. وفي ردٍّ له هذا الشهر، قال: "لا أشعر بالارتياح لدعم أي دولة تُطبّق نظام المواطنة على أساس الدين أو أي أساس آخر. أعتقد أنه كما هو الحال في هذا البلد، يجب ترسيخ المساواة في كل دول العالم. هذا هو اعتقادي". تُصرّ إسرائيل على أن جميع الأديان لها حقوق متساوية بموجب القانون.
يُقرّ بحق إسرائيل في الوجود كدولة، مُضيفًا في برنامج "ليت شو" يوم الاثنين: "مثل جميع الدول، أعتقد أن لها الحق في الوجود ومسؤولية الالتزام بالقانون الدولي".
صرح أيضاً بأنه لا مجال لمعاداة السامية في مدينة نيويورك، مُضيفًا أنه في حال انتخابه، سيزيد التمويل المُخصّص لمكافحة جرائم الكراهية.
قضايا العنصرية حول ممداني

1. Trump described Mamdani as a "communist lunatic" and a "disaster in the making." For his part, the mayoral candidate stated that he would try to work with President Trump for the city, but would not back down.
2. In an interview with "Good Liars," he told Trump, "If you want to talk about how you're making life harder for New Yorkers by going after so many people in this city and its fabric, I'll be there to confront you."
